Itinerary Plan
Day 1: Sipi Trailhead (Kapkwai) to Kajeri Camp (3383masl, +1683mASL, 23km)
After an early and energizing breakfast, we will transfer by Boda Boda (motorcycle taxi) for 12 km to the Kapkwai trailhead, adjacent to Sipi. Upon arrival, our dedicated team of porters, ranger guides, and your cheerful chef will be ready to commence your unforgettable journey. Today’s trek takes you through a captivating montane forest, offering potential sightings of various primate species and forest birds. We will stop for a hot lunch at Tutum Cave Camp before continuing for another 11km to Kajeri Camp, where you will spend your first night amidst the tranquility of the mountain. Day 2: Kajeri Camp to Mwongogo Camp (3800masl, +417mASL, 12km)
Wake up to the beauty of a mountain sunrise and enjoy a hearty breakfast. After packing up, we will set off towards Mwongogo Camp, located 12km and higher in elevation than Kajeri. The terrain today presents a mix of both steep and gentle inclines as we ascend through the changing vegetation zones. The reward for your efforts will be the stunning panoramic views that unfold as we enter the heather zone, characterized by open grasslands, unique flora, and breathtaking vistas overlooking the Simu Valley. Mwongogo Cave Camp offers a spectacular 180-degree view, perfect for enjoying the evening sunset.

Day 3: Mwongogo Camp to Wagagai Peak (4321masl, +521mASL, 11km)
Today is a highlight for many of our trekkers — the ascent to Wagagai Peak, the summit of Mount Elgon! After an early breakfast, we will pack snacks, ample drinking water, and energy bars to fuel our climb in the thinning air. The distance to Wagagai Peak from camp is approximately 5-6km, and the trekking time will vary based on individual fitness levels. Our philosophy is to embrace the journey, encouraging you to walk at a comfortable pace. After conquering the peak and soaking in the incredible views, we will loop downhill, detouring to see Jackson Peak, Jackson Pool, the caldera base, and spot crater lakes before returning to Mwongogo Camp for our second night there. Day 4: Mwongogo Camp to Hunters Cave Camp (3870masl, +70mASL, 11km)
Following breakfast and packing our backpacks, we bid farewell to Mwongogo Camp and head towards Hunters Cave Camp. This camp’s name originates from the local hunters who frequented the area before the park’s gazettement. Situated at an elevation of 3,870masl and covering 11km, the trail today features a mix of gentle and a few steeper sections. Expect more panoramic views, unique plant and flower species, a detour past Mt. Mubiyi, and the chance to glimpse the Kenyan side of the border. Be sure to have snacks, enough water, and Sunscreen readily accessible, as the varying paces of the group may extend the trekking time.We anticipate reaching Hunters Cave Camp within 5-6 hours, where you will spend your fourth night. Day 5: Piswa Gate Exit (-1680mASL, 16km)
Our final day begins with breakfast before we pack up for our descent. Today's 16km trek follows a gentle landscape, and your arrival time at the Piswa Gate exit will depend on your individual fitness level and pace. We estimate an average hiking time of 5-6 hours, with a slightly longer duration of 6-7 hours for slower hikers. Upon reaching the gate, you will sign out, say goodbye to our wonderful team, and then take a Boda Boda back to the charming Sipi Falls area.
